ALAY NG PUSO: SAVE OUR STUDENTS

Who has ever thought that the year 2020 would transform lives as we know it? Dealing with the unforeseen challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it has taken a significant toll on people all across the world, the Philippines included. It has affected a lot of us physically and emotionally and being unprepared, it has hit HOME.

Students enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Nursing were looking forward to learning the art and science of caring for individuals of all ages, families, groups, and communities, sick or well and in all settings. The basics of this unique learning environment have been significantly impacted by the rapid spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), creating uncertainty and complexity regarding the implications for higher education.

An increased number of deserving students, 25, have applied for financial assistance and scholarship in the College of Nursing because of the economic impact of this pandemic. Some have disenrolled. Some were thinking of not enrolling this term, and a number of them were even thinking of transferring to a public university. Some are planning to disenroll next time because they do not have a way of getting financial assistance. As one slogan said, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” ®.

Several generous individuals, Thomasian nursing alumni, classes/batches and other organizations have provided scholarships that brought their dreams to reality. Let our uniting force bring those educational dreams closer to realization. Let the financial assistance be the instrument of these highly qualified students to graduate, fulfill a competitive career, be future advocates for caring, and make a difference. We need your help because learning can’t wait.

USTNAI is a non-profit organization by virtue of its charitable programs. It is the goal of USTNAI to collaborate with other nursing, professional and community organizations through outreach programs geared towards health promotion, disease prevention and health care support to those who need it, who have limited access to it, and to those who cannot afford it. We cannot meet our goal without the generosity and assistance of other individuals and organizations. Thus, our combined resources make our efforts go even further. We truly appreciate the support to help our mission. Together, we can provide the much needed medical, surgical and dental services as well as humanitarian outreach to the underprivileged, underserved and the most vulnerable individuals, groups and communities.
